Dana Saxon

Dana SaxonAfrican Diaspora family history and identity

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and currently living in The Hague, Dana Saxon (1979) is a genealogist, an entrepreneur, a nonprofit professional, a blogger, and an enthusiastic traveler.

Dana has extensive experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, and youth development with both small and large nonprofit organizations in the United States. She spent two years as the Deputy Director of New Leaders, Bay Area, managing partnerships and fundraising for the Oakland office of the national organization. She then moved to Brooklyn, NY to join iMentor in NYC, where she was the Director of Partnerships for more than 3 years.

In 2011, Dana started to pursue a Master's degree at the University of Amsterdam. In 2013 she completed the MSc in Sociology, researching African Diaspora family history and identity development in the Netherlands and Suriname.

Her research, as well as a passion for her own family history, led Dana to launch a nonprofit organization, Ancestors unKnown, in 2013. The program partners with schools and community organizations in the US, the Netherlands, and Suriname to introduce young people to untold histories and their own family history research.

Dana is thrilled with every opportunity to share her knowledge about educating young people about their histories, identity development, and the importance of knowing about where we all come from. All of her lectures and workshops are informed by her historical knowledge, international travels, and growing up as an African American in the United States.

Her lectures and workshops are tailored talks to the audience's age-range and level of expertise on the topic. As such, the information is never boring or over anyone's head. Audiences leave my presentations having gained new information and the inspiration to act, ideally pursuing whatever goal the event organizer wants the audience to achieve.

Dana gives lectures and workshops on:

  • US/African American culture and history
  • Genealogy/family history research
  • Identity development
  • History education
  • Migration & identity of formerly colonized communities
